Marguerite Elizabeth Nelson, 85, of San Leandro, Calif., formerly of Fort Madison, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at Casa Sandoval in Hayward, Calif.
Born June 7, 1921, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Maud and Pete Hirstine. She married Joseph Nelson. He preceded her in death.
She lived in San Leandro for 45 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Dettmer of Castro Valley, Calif.; one sister, Doris McDonnell of Fort Madison; one brother, Verle Hirstine of Montana; nieces; and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
The funeral for Mrs. Nelson was Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, in the Reflection Chapel at the Chapel of Times in Hayward, Calif.

Marijo Hirstine, 76, of Burlington died at 7:49 p.m. Monday, March 2, 2009, at Great River Medical Center in West Bur-lington.
Born June 26, 1932, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Frank E. Hirstine and Maxine Richardson.
Ms. Hirstine was a teacher at Sunnyside Elementary School. She worked for the Burlington School system for 21 years, Delta Airlines for six years, and Northwestern Bell for three years.
She was of the Christian faith and enjoyed gardening, crafts, sewing, quilting and traveling.
Survivors include her mother of Burlington; one brother, Gary F. Hirstine of Kerrville, Texas; two aunts, Betty Robertson of Springfield, Mo., and Madelyn Murphy of Waverly; one niece; one nephew; five great-nieces; and five great-nephews; and two great-great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father.
There will be no formal visitation.
The memorial service for Ms. Hirstine will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Klein's Chapel, with the Rev. Dean Moberg officiating. Ash committal will be in Oakland Cemetery in Fort Madison at a later date.

Information Pertaining to this:
His grandson Lewis Summers stated that John married a Mrs. Blake.
Some researchers cite that Judge Lewis Summers stated that John Summers married Elizabeth Blake.
In a John Summers deposition he states that he married the widow Lucas in the Winter of 1717.
In his will, John West made a bequest to Seith Lucas who was a tenant on his land. He also bequeathed to John, and Benjamin Blake and their father Robert Blake, also tenants on his land. Now, Judge Lewis Summers (mentioned above) stated that John Summers was married to Elizabeth Blake. Some researchers feel Seith was a nickname for Elizabeth, and it was Elizabeth Blake Lucas who married as her second husband John Summers.
There is a land transaction in 1723 from Thomas Harrison giving "Seith Lucas and her 2nd husband John Summers, and their son John" a lease for life.

Marriage of Thomas Pettit & Behethelon Owen on 16 Apr 1785 is listed in the IGI in three submissions: batch 7013802, p. 97, batch 7732027, p. 68, and batch 8330802, p. 84. They all have the same date and county, but Thomas' name is spelled twice as Pettit and once as Pettet, and his bride's name is spelled variously as Bethethelon Owens, Behethelon Owens, and Bethelon Owen. The second submission is the same one that lists all the Washington Co. Ky marriages of the children listed in the 1834 will of Thomas of that county, which is how I conclude that these are the same individual. Note that the first submission is the same one that listed the marriage of Nathaniel Pettet and Rebecca Owen. (This submission also includes a marriage of Samuel Pettit and Elizabeth Bragg on 10 Dec 1783 in Fauquier Co., VA.)

Mary A. Wienen, 99, of Galena, IL passed away Sunday, April 18, 2021, at Galena Stauss Senior Care Community. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, a drive-through gathering for Mary will be held from 5 to 7 PM, Thursday, April 22, 2021, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. The family requests you remain in your vehicle, and they will greet you at the front of the building under the portico. A private family funeral mass will be held, Friday, April 23, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She was born December 30, 1921, in Galena the daughter of Albert and Helena (Schnerre) Oldenburg. Mary was united in marriage Harold E. Wienen on July 20, 1946, at St. Mary’s Church, Alton, IL, and he preceded her in death on August 11, 2003. She spent most of her life in Galena. She attended St Mary’s grade school and graduated from Galena High School, class of 1940. After high school Mary went to California with her sister and worked in an office for an oil company. She returned to Galena where she worked for Dr. Harney, at her brother Bob’s grocery store, at Leo’s grocery store and for a short time at the Whirl n Skip factory. Mary was a woman of tremendous faith and was a lifelong member of St Mary’s Church in Galena. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society and the Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed volunteer work at many places, including the church; food pantry and Galena-Stauss Senior Healthcare Community and Nursing Home, hospice, and many other organizations. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She was “grandma” to many more than just her biological grandkids and was known for her open door, welcoming words, and chocolate chip cookies, which were always on hand. (She once tried to pass off store bought cookies and that just did not cut it with the neighborhood kids!) Mary made everything special – whether it was holidays, dinners, handmade Raggedy Ann dolls, homemade doll clothes (which always included undergarments to go along with the dresses), refinished antique gifts or time spent with her. She always remembered birthdays and would be the first to pick up the phone to stay in touch. She always appreciated everything done for her and did not realize how much SHE was appreciated for just being Mary. Mary B. Hanning, 71, of Huntsville, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Snyder's Vaughn-Haven Nursing Home in Rushville.
She was born June 4, 1931, in Rushville, to the late Joseph and Pauline Greenleaf Bovey. She married Glen R. Hanning Sept. 27, 1952, at the First Christian Church in Rushville. He survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Bonnie Hanning (husband David) Childress of Danville, Peggy (husband Michael) Dillon of Gaffney, S.C., and Nancy (husband Richard) Willis of Clinton, Iowa; two sons, Danny (wife Janet) Hanning of Huntsville and Robert Hanning of Macomb; 12 grandchildren; three-great-grandchildren; and one brother, John Bovey of Iowa City, Iowa.
She attended Illinois State University in Normal and graduated from Western Illinois University in Macomb. She taught various grades at Southeastern School District and Schuyler School District in Rushville many years before retiring.
She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Rushville, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
She was a charter member and secretary for many years of the Illinois Association for Advancement of Archaeology; a member of Siloam Springs Earth Science Club, where she served as secretary, president, vice president, and editor; a member of Geodeland Earth Science Club, where she served as director and secretary; a member of Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies, where she served as president, vice president, state director and was currently serving as secretary; a director of American Mineralogical and Geological Societies; a member and secretary of Two Rivers Archaeological Society; and a member and secretary of Mississippi Valley Archeological Society. She gave programs on rocks and minerals for many school classes and civic groups, and also taught square dancing classes for Spoon River College and many 4-H clubs.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Rushville, with David Haney officiating. Burial was in Huntsville Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville was in charge of arrangements.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Galena. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Galena. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, where there will be a rosary at 7 p.m.
She was born on June 29, 1910, in Benton, Wis., daughter of Henry W. and Ann (Baxter) Bainbridge. She graduated from Benton High School in 1928.
She married LeRoy M. "Roy" Oldenburg on Nov. 8, 1928; he preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 1985. She and her husband owned and operated the Palace Motel and Ballroom for 45 years.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed visiting with friends at the Adult Day Care Center in Galena.
Surviving are a son, James (Ardith) Oldenburg, of Janesville, Wis.; three daughters, Linda (Ken) Pluym, of Galena, Jane Hyde, of Metairie, La., and Betty (Harvey) Lewin, of Davenport, Iowa; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Betty Schetgen, who took wonderful care of their mother for several years, as well as Barb Coleman, who also looked after Mary. They would also like to thank Angie and all of her staff at the Adult Day Care Center and the staff of the Galena-Stauss Hospital and Dr. Gary Bernard, as well as Hospice of Dubuque.

Maureen H. Steiner, 76, of Lebanon passed away on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center with her family by her side.
Maureen was born July 4, 1940, in Madison, Wisconsin, the daughter of Harry and Antoinette (Oldenburg) Hillary. She grew up and attended school in the San Francisco Bay area.
Maureen married the love of her life and best friend, Edward Steiner, on June 16, 1962, in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were happily married for over 54 years. Ed and Maureen lived in southern California for 10 years before moving to Lebanon in 1972 where they raised their family in a home that Ed built.
Maureen was a loving wife and mother, and a full-time homemaker. Her greatest joy in life was caring for her family. She enjoyed family gatherings, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved spending time at the beach and taking camping trips.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Edward of Lebanon; daughters Debbie Steiner Odom (Mike) of Wilsonville, Corinne Thurber of Lebanon, Tracey Manning (Pat) of Brownsville, and Lorri Bradley (Dan) of Brentwood, California; son Eddie Steiner (May) of Lebanon; mother Antoinette Hillary (Staggs) of Lebanon; brother Ted Hillary of Lebanon; sisters Maxine Hillary of Lebanon and Kathy Hillary of Sweet Home; 15 grandchildren, Josh, Brandy, Nola, Cody, Jared, Megan, Britney, Hillary, Katey, Jacob, Bo, Mikaela, Melissa, Nicole and Kylie; seventeen great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Belle.
Maureen was preceded in death by her father, Harry Hillary; and two grandsons, Troy and Ryker.
A celebration of life will be held for the immediate family.

Maurice Krebill - The Burlington Hawk Eye
Maurice Frederick Krebill, 88, of Donnellson died at 12:05 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at the Kensington in Fort Madison.
Born March 20, 1922, in Donnellson, he was the son of Henry F. and Barbara Auwaerter Krebill. On June 6, 1948, he married Naomi Werner.
Mr. Krebill farmed for more than 55 years northwest of Donnellson on the family farms. He served in the 8th Air Force in England, France and Belgium during World War II. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Donnellson.
He served on the Farm Service Board of Directors. He was a member of Lee County Farm Bureau serving as Lee County president and other positions. He was a member of Donnellson American Legion Post 474 and past committee member of ASCS for Lee County.
He enjoyed modern square dancing with his wife, riding his four-wheeler with his border collie and Farmall tractors.
Survivors include his wife of the Kensington; four daughters, Marlene Dickens of Davenport, Rita Krebill of Livermore, Calif., Rhonda Edwards of Cedar Rapids and Patricia Koller of Donnellson; one son, Alvin Krebill of Donnellson; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Karayanis of Santa Fe, N.M.; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one infant son, his parents and one brother.
Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory in Donnellson where family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Biography
Laura Katherine Krebill passed away on Friday, January 11th, 2013 of sudden cardiac arrest at her home in Wellington, CO. She was 63.
Laura was actively involved in her surrounding communities. She was one of the most active members in the Larimer Chapter of the Spellbinders Storytelling organization. She told stories in the Thompson School District to several classes at Ponderosa Elementary, Coyote Ridge Elementary, and Lincoln Elementary, as well as Trinity Lutheran Preschool. She was a certified Spellbinders trainer who taught others the art of oral storytelling and was a member of and served as the Chairperson of the Larimer Steering Committee, and in 2010 was named the Spellbinders Storyteller of the Year by the Larimer Chapter. She was also an active member of the Friends of the Loveland Public Library Foundation, and served on several committees that supported the Events of the Library. Reading, storytelling, and books were paramount in Laura’s life, along with her passion for caring for animals, most recently her dear boxers, Sage and Abby, her birds, Iko and Berry, and has fostered 4-H pigs the last few years.
Born on May 14, 1949 in Powell, Wyoming, to Floyd and Wanda (Sloan) Krebill, Laura and her family lived in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Minnesota, Alaska, Iran, and Norway. She went to high school in Alaska, received her BA in Literature from Middlebury College in VT, and then went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Literature from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After working for over 25 years in the cutting edge of computer technology, Laura decided to pursue her “softer” side with a career in Massage Therapy. She graduated from the Healing Arts Institute in Ft. Collins, CO in 2002, and continued to teach there into 2012. She also worked the last several years as an H & R Block tax consultant.

Laura was preceded in death by her brother, Daniel Krebill; her sister, Louellen Krebill; and her parents. She is survived by many relatives and friends. Megan M. Sproule, 60 of Galena, IL passed away Monday, January 25, 2021, at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, a private family service will be held on Friday, January 29, 2021, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. Masks and social distancing will be required. Burial of the cremated remains will follow in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Galena. She was born on October 22, 1960, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Dale “Chip” and Mona (Mooney) Chapman. Megan graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1978. She was united in marriage to Eugene R. “Geno” Sproule on August 11, 1979, and he survives. Megan began working right out of high school at Stairs Bakery and Deli for two years. She then worked as a cook for the Market House Tavern. Megan had a daycare in her home for nine years and cleaned houses for seven of those nine years. She was a floral designer for ten years at the Galena Greenhouse. Megan then worked at Country Inn and Suites as a housekeeping manager for five years. In 2011, she began working at the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community until 2019. Megan enjoyed gardening, crafting, and spending time with her grandkids, and attending their many sporting events. She loved time with her friends and enjoyed all their talks, lunches, and walks. It meant so much to her that they were always there when she needed them. Megan is survived by her husband, Eugene “Geno”, her two sons, Nathan (Michelle) and Joshua (Danielle) Sproule, four grandchildren, five brothers, Rick (Mary) Chapman of Galena, Steve Chapman, of Dubuque, Rod (Debbie) Chapman, of Oak Creek, WI, Kevin (Julie) Chapman, of Dubuque and Paul Chapman of De Pere, WI, three sisters, Brigid “Bea” (Kenneth) Ellerbach, of Epworth, IA, Cara (Roger) Middendorf and Kristen Chapman, both of East Dubuque, seven nieces, ten nephews, twelve great-nieces, and 13 great-nephews. Ormond (O.D.) Schmidt, 84, of McPherson, Kan., died May 6, 2007. He was born May 20, 1922, to Karl and Helen (Schroeder) Schmidt at Goessel.
He grew up on a farm. He graduated with the class of 1940 from Goessel Rural High School. He was baptized and joined Goessel Mennonite Church on June 5, 1938, where he was a member until his death.
After high school, he began farming with his father. He also did road grading for Spring Valley Township. In the winter of 1946 he worked for Bethel College in North Newton in farm maintenance. He later worked at Unruh Service Station.
He married Emma Ruth Huxman on Sept. 5, 1947, at Calvary Tabernacle Church in Moundridge.
They moved to a small farm without any modern conveniences southeast of Goessel. Later they were offered a larger farm northeast of Canton. Here he shared labor and equipment with his father and brother Roy. When his parents retired from farming, he and his family moved to the home place northwest of Goessel. In 1958, he began working at Hesston Corp. and was employed there for about 30 years.
In 1963, he took flying lessons and got his private pilot’s license. He and his wife joined the International Flying Farmers organization in 1964, which was an inspiration and very dear to their hearts. They retired from farming in 1994 and moved to McPherson.
Survivors include his wife of almost 60 years, Emma Ruth; two sons, Myron Schmidt of Newton and Neil Schmidt and his wife, Virginia, of McPherson; a daughter, Ellen Gilbert and her husband, Larry, of McPherson; a sister, Velora Krehbiel of Lakin; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

LOUISE E. MOYER
Louise Elizabeth Moyer was born May 18, 1890, in Moundridge, Kan., to Christian and Elizabeth Latscher. She died Jan. 1, 1989 at age 98.
In 1901 she moved with her parents to a farm south of Deer Creek, Okla., where she grew up. She attended Antelope School and later furthered her education at Edmond, Okla.
She was baptized into Deer Creek Mennonite Church on Nov. 11, 1906.
On Jan. 1, 1915, she was married to William Q. Moyer. They lived on a farm west of Deer Creek until July 1981 when they moved into Hillcrest Manor in Blackwell. Her husband died June 9, 1983.
She was a former member of the Better Homes and Garden Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Frances (Mrs. John) Linn of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mary (Mrs. Roland) Duerksen of Oxford, Ohio; two sons, Allan Moyer of Deer Creek and Floyd Moyer of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a brother, William Latscher of Deer Creek; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Latscher, Emma Latscher, Ruth Pittman and Clara Pittman, and three brothers, Arthur, David and Paul Latscher.

Michael was a Master Tailor for the Austrian Ruling Family and his wife Anna was a professional cook for the same family. He took an oath of citizenship in the town of Baden, Austria in 1827. He was married in Vienna in 1827 and immigrated to America in 1838. He immigrated from Hamburg to New Orleans 1 OCT 1838. The original documents were kept by John A. Binninger in his copy of the "History of the 96th Regiment." The book and its contents survived a disasterous house fire becasue they were kept in a metal tank. These documents provided the information which led to finding the Parish Records in Nimburg, Baden Germany which showed the baptisims, marriages, and deaths of his family and ancestors. These Parrish Records had been filmed by the LDS Church and were available through their Family History Centers.
Michael and Augustrus Wierich bought 160 acres of land in Section 4, Tep 27, near Pilot Knob south of Galena, Illinois for the sum of $380. He sold the land in 1843 prior to his death.
At the time of his marriage to Anna, she was Roman Catholic and they were married in the Schottenkirche in Vienna.

Miller Samuel Grehbiel
In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries a Samuel Grehbiel family occupied what was known as the Altleiningen mill in the RheinPhalz area in southwestern Germany. The mill stood on the banks of a stream called Echbach, a short distance down stream from Altleiningen towards Grünstadt. These flour mills Were typical in this part of Europe wheresoever streams of sufficient flow existed to turn the water-wheels which operated the mill machinery . Much of the water which spilled from these wheels would find its way back into the stream and continue down to turn the wheel for other mills.
In those times flowing streams were the principal source of power for many industries.
About two centuries before there existed a protestant movement called Anabaptism. This was somewhat more radical than that which was initiated by
Martin Luther.
This movement was met with vehement actions by State and Church. Many were destroyed, many more tortured and driven into the vallys of the Alps or into the swamps of the low-lands. A converted catholic Priest, Menno Simons, made an effort to gather some of these refugees into groups and under his leadership formed the branch known as Mennonites. In the 1600s and 1700s many of these Mennonites fled to America and settled in the state of Pennsylvania and Virginia.
By the time of the Grehbiels at the Altleiningen mill, the Mennonites were starting to conform to the practice of other protestant Evangelical churches. In certain areas officials permitted Mennonite members to erect their own churches. However, all young men were required to serve two years of military training and be subject to conscription in case of war. This was contrary to the belief of the Mennonite religion and so these people were still at odds with the Church-State government and therefore not accorded full citizenship.
In addition the farmers were subjected to exorbitant rents and taxes. Because of the scarcity of land young men were unable to prwide a home and in consequence were not permitted to marry. Teen-aged boys were required to serve a four year apprenticeship in sane craft or trade and after being discharged they were permitted to travel as journeymen and work for others or perhaps ultimately establish a business for themselves.
Abraham, a son of Samuel and his first wife Katharina, was Mayor of Altleinigen for a period of time. While he was thus in office he signed all Official papers spelling his name, Abraham Krebill instead of the way his father spelled it. There is evidence that the rest of this family followed his Practice from then on.

Robert Montgomery, Jr. was born circa 1750 in Augusta (now Botetourt) County, Virginia, and moved to Botetourt (now Wythe) County, Virginia, in 1770/1771. About 1774 he married his cousin, Esther Montgomery, daughter of John Montgomery and Agnes Crockett. They moved to Lincoln (now Garrard) County, Kentucky, about 1782. He inherited land from his father in 1789, and on October 7, 1790, he bought 372 acres on Dix River from Jacob and Ann Copelin for L 5.10. He died about 1793, although administration of the estate was not made until August 1799, when his widow Esther was made administer..
On November 7, 1807, the heirs of Robert Montgomery, with his brother James, bought 1,400 acres on Tygert’s Creek in Greenup County, Kentucky, from Simon Kenton for $1,000. Esther Montgomery sold James McGavock her share of the estate of her brother, John, in Wythe County, Virginia, for $60.00 on July 31, 1815, and in 1819 gave power of attorney to her brother-in-law, Joseph Crockett, to sell lots in Evansham (now Wytheville) belonging to John. On August 29, 1817, her heirs agreed to free one of her slaves upon her death..
Esther Montgomery died in 1843 and her will divided her property among her children and grandchildren: on March 1, 1848, the heirs sold 111 acres in Garrard County, Kentucky, to Smith Rout at $9.23 per share. [1] According to SAR papers Robert and Esther had a son Isaace who married Nancy Stone..

MOSES B. HARVEY, deceased. The Harvey family can be traced to Thomas Harvey (son of Thomas Harvey, of Somersetshire, England), who was born in 1617. In company with his brother William, he came to Dorchester, Mass., in 1636, and two years later he was found at Cohasset, where he was one of the first purchasers. Between 1639 and 1642 he was admitted as a proprietor of Taunton, and about 1642 he married Elizabeth Andrews, who was born in England in 1614. He died in Taunton, in 1651.
John Harvey, son of Thomas, the emigrant settler, was born in Taunton, Mass., about 1647, and married in 1675. In 1686, Mr. Harvey purchased land of Isaac Willey which lay mostly within the limits of Lyme, Conn. This was in what is the present town of Salem, which was formed in 1819 out of portions of Lyme, Colchester and Montville. Mr. Harvey died in Lyme, Jan. 18, 1705, and his wife Jan. 9, 1709. Their children were: John, born in 1676, died in 1767; Thomas, born in 1678, died in 1725; Elizabeth, born in 1680, died in 1752; and Mary and Sarah, twins born in 1682, died in 1705.
The great-grandfather of Moses B. Harvey married Mrs. Lockie Harris, of Preston, Connecticut. Amos Harvey, the grandfather of Moses B. Harvey, was born in Preston, Conn., and he married Elizabeth Giddings, also a native of Preston. Their children were: (1) Amos; (2) Joseph, who remained in Preston, became a farmer and a milk dealer, married Betsey Phillips, and reared a family of seven children; (3) Paul, who was a shoemaker, married Betsey Green, and reared a family of six children, and at her death married Margaret Fitch, of Preston, moved to Stafford, had a family of six more children born to him, and died in Stafford; and (4) Rhoda, who married Richard Stroud.
Amos Harvey, father of the late Moses B. Harvey, was one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of Stafford in his day. His birth occurred July 29, 1781, in Preston, Conn., his death in Stafford, Feb. 24, 1846. He married Sept. 27, 1801, Esther Benjamin, who was born March 10, 1781. Their children were: Julia A., who married William Moore, a shoemaker in Stafford, who had learned his trade with his father-in-law; Moses B., of this biography; Cynthia, the twin sister of Moses B., who married Elijah Fairman, of Stafford; Philip, an iron molder, who married Malinda Howlands, of Rome, N.Y.; Esther, who married Lemuel Ingalls, a machinist, who later managed the “Orinoca Hotel” at Stafford Springs; Mary, who married Marcus Howland, a tailor of Spencer, Mass.; Amos, a foundryman, who later in partnership with his brother Moses B., engaged in the manufacture of cotton warps (he married Lorinda Kibbe); Philena, who married Horatio Ledoyt, a native of Monson, Mass., who became a machinist of Stafford; and Park, a molder in the foundry, who married Althea Humphrey, of Tolland.
By trade Mr. Harvey was both a shoemaker and tanner, and had a large tannery on the site of the present Riverside mill, at Stafford Hollow. Not only was he a man of fine business qualifications, but he was favored with robust health, his only sickness being his last. It is pleasant to recall a man like “Squire” Harvey, genial, kind hearted and ever ready to help those who could not help themselves, but still a man of strong convictions, firm in his faith in the Democratic party, delighting in a practical joke, yet the man on whom the community could call when some trust or responsibility was to be assumed. Mr. Harvey was one of the founders of the Universalist Society in Stafford street, and performed more marriages than any other justice of the peace in his locality.
BENJAMIN FAMILY. The mother of Moses B. Harvey came from a family whose ancestry reaches far back, and whose name became widely known during the last century through the brilliant career of her talented nephew Park Benjamin, the author. The family records tell that John Benjamin came in the ship “Lion” to Boston, Mass., Sept. 16, 1632, and was made a freeman Nov. 6, of the same year; was appointed May 20, 1633, by the General Court, a constable; was a proprietor of Cambridge, removed about 1637 to Watertown, and died in 1645, leaving a widow, Abigail, and children, most of whom were born in England.
Joseph Benjamin, son of John, the settler, born about 1640, married June 10, 1661, Jemima, who was a daughter of Thomas Lambert or Lombard. Mr. Benjamin sold his estate in Cambridge in 1686 and he is spoken of at Barnstable and as having lived some time in Yarmouth. Joseph Benjamin’s name is given
among those of the early settlers of Preston, Conn., about 1690. Later he removed to New London, Conn., and died there in 1704, leaving a widow, Sarah, and children. The records tell of the inventory of the state of Joseph Benjamin taken April 27, 1704, which speaks of his widow Sarah and children; Joseph, aged thirty; John, aged twenty-one; Jemima; Sarah; Mary and Marcy.
Park Benjamin, the journalist and author, was born Aug. 13, 1809, in Demerara, British Guiana, where his father was engaged in business. Park was liberally educated, became a distinguished man, and made his home in the city of New York, where he died Sept. 12, 1864.
MOSES B. HARVEY was born Feb. 8, 1806, in Stafford, Conn., and died Jan. 22, 1874. His youth was spent in Stafford, and there his business honors were won. Mr. Harvey enjoyed only such advantages as the common schools afforded, first in Stafford, later in Colchester. At the early age of fourteen he began an active life in the tannery owned by his father, learning the business of preparing the skins which later were converted into foot-wear in his father’s store.
This business, however, did not altogether please young Moses, and he later entered a machine shop situated in the same neighborhood, operated by Harvey Waters, and remained there until he had passed through the different grades and had become proficient. The mechanical knowledge thus acquired aided him greatly in the inventions which he subsequently worked out and patented, some of these being among the most useful of their kind ever applied in woolen mills.
Mr. Harvey with Elijah Fairman soon established a general machine shop for the manufacture of woolen machinery, in Stafford Hollow. Very early in the business of this firm a disastrous fire swept away the first venture, and might easily have discouraged a less determined man than Moses Harvey. However, he overcame this obstacle, and soon another shop was built on the same site in Stafford, and here for many years he was a successful builder of the peculiar machinery used in woolen mills.
Mr. Harvey was the inventor of the flock cutter, a most valuable machine, which he soon patented; he also made many improvements on old machinery, that in some cases almost revolutionized methods of manufacture. For a time Mr. Harvey conducted the business alone, but later took Charles Holt into
partnership; they gave employment to from eight to ten hands, and did a most satisfactory business. Finally he disposed of the business to Mr. Holt.
Mr. Harvey then began the business of manufacturing cotton warps in Stafford Hollow, in connection with his machine business, Mr. Harvey giving his particular attention to the manufacturing and Mr. Holt to the machinery. For many years he was the agent for the Valley Company’s Warp mills at Stafford Hollow, which he had established. At the same time he controlled, with other partners, the Hop River Warp mills, of which he was general manager. These mills were located at Columbia, Conn., and Mr. Harvey’s partners were Joshua Lord, of Willimantic, and J.H. Bolton, of Stafford. Previous to the sale of his interests in the Valley Company’s mills, Mr. Harvey built, in 1857, the present Glyn mills. Here with J.H. Bolton and Amos Harvey he continued the manufacture of cotton warps until his death, being the agent and general manager.
Mr. Harvey was identified with many business interests aside from those mentioned. For years, from January, 1870, until his death, he was president of the Stafford National Bank, of which he was one of the original incorporators, in 1854, and one of its first directors. He was also one of the original incorporators of the Stafford Springs Savings Bank, and the first vice-president of the institution, serving in that capacity and also as director for a long period, ending only with his demise.
A staunch advocate of Jacksonian Democracy, Mr. Harvey was not ambitious for office, although at various times he served as selectman of the town, and in other capacities. At one time he was a representative from Stafford to the Legislature, was judge of probate for several years, and was appointed by the governor Railroad Commissioner.
The marriage of Mr. Harvey took place Oct. 8, 1827, to Rachel Jennings. Miss Jennings was born Oct. 29, 1807, a daughter of William and Anna (Staunton) Jennings, the former of whom was a farmer of Willington, Conn. The death of Mrs. Harvey occurred Feb. 9, 1884. MOSES B. HARVEY, deceased. The Harvey family can be traced to Thomas Harvey (son of Thomas Harvey, of Somersetshire, England), who was born in 1617. In company with his brother William, he came to Dorchester, Mass., in 1636, and two years later he was found at Cohasset, where he was one of the first purchasers. Between 1639 and 1642 he was admitted as a proprietor of Taunton, and about 1642 he married Elizabeth Andrews, who was born in England in 1614. He died in Taunton, in 1651.
John Harvey, son of Thomas, the emigrant settler, was born in Taunton, Mass., about 1647, and married in 1675. In 1686, Mr. Harvey purchased land of Isaac Willey which lay mostly within the limits of Lyme, Conn. This was in what is the present town of Salem, which was formed in 1819 out of portions of Lyme, Colchester and Montville. Mr. Harvey died in Lyme, Jan. 18, 1705, and his wife Jan. 9, 1709. Their children were: John, born in 1676, died in 1767; Thomas, born in 1678, died in 1725; Elizabeth, born in 1680, died in 1752; and Mary and Sarah, twins born in 1682, died in 1705.
The great-grandfather of Moses B. Harvey married Mrs. Lockie Harris, of Preston, Connecticut. Amos Harvey, the grandfather of Moses B. Harvey, was born in Preston, Conn., and he married Elizabeth Giddings, also a native of Preston. Their children were: (1) Amos; (2) Joseph, who remained in Preston, became a farmer and a milk dealer, married Betsey Phillips, and reared a family of seven children; (3) Paul, who was a shoemaker, married Betsey Green, and reared a family of six children, and at her death married Margaret Fitch, of Preston, moved to Stafford, had a family of six more children born to him, and died in Stafford; and (4) Rhoda, who married Richard Stroud.
Amos Harvey, father of the late Moses B. Harvey, was one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of Stafford in his day. His birth occurred July 29, 1781, in Preston, Conn., his death in Stafford, Feb. 24, 1846. He married Sept. 27, 1801, Esther Benjamin, who was born March 10, 1781. Their children were: Julia A., who married William Moore, a shoemaker in Stafford, who had learned his trade with his father-in-law; Moses B., of this biography; Cynthia, the twin sister of Moses B., who married Elijah Fairman, of Stafford; Philip, an iron molder, who married Malinda Howlands, of Rome, N.Y.; Esther, who married Lemuel Ingalls, a machinist, who later managed the Orinoca Hotel at Stafford Springs; Mary, who married Marcus Howland, a tailor of Spencer, Mass.; Amos, a foundryman, who later in partnership with his brother Moses B., engaged in the manufacture of cotton warps (he married Lorinda Kibbe); Philena, who married Horatio Ledoyt, a native of Monson, Mass., who became a machinist of Stafford; and Park, a molder in the foundry, who married Althea Humphrey, of Tolland.
By trade Mr. Harvey was both a shoemaker and tanner, and had a large tannery on the site of the present Riverside mill, at Stafford Hollow. Not only was he a man of fine business qualifications, but he was favored with robust health, his only sickness being his last. It is pleasant to recall a man like Squire Harvey, genial, kind hearted and ever ready to help those who could not help themselves, but still a man of strong convictions, firm in his faith in the Democratic party, delighting in a practical joke, yet the man on whom the community could call when some trust or responsibility was to be assumed. Mr. Harvey was one of the founders of the Universalist Society in Stafford street, and performed more marriages than any other justice of the peace in his locality.
BENJAMIN FAMILY. The mother of Moses B. Harvey came from a family whose ancestry reaches far back, and whose name became widely known during the last century through the brilliant career of her talented nephew Park Benjamin, the author. The family records tell that John Benjamin came in the ship Lion to Boston, Mass., Sept. 16, 1632, and was made a freeman Nov. 6, of the same year; was appointed May 20, 1633, by the General Court, a constable; was a proprietor of Cambridge, removed about 1637 to Watertown, and died in 1645, leaving a widow, Abigail, and children, most of whom were born in England.
Joseph Benjamin, son of John, the settler, born about 1640, married June 10, 1661, Jemima, who was a daughter of Thomas Lambert or Lombard. Mr. Benjamin sold his estate in Cambridge in 1686 and he is spoken of at Barnstable and as having lived some time in Yarmouth. Joseph Benjamins name is given
among those of the early settlers of Preston, Conn., about 1690. Later he removed to New London, Conn., and died there in 1704, leaving a widow, Sarah, and children. The records tell of the inventory of the state of Joseph Benjamin taken April 27, 1704, which speaks of his widow Sarah and children; Joseph, aged thirty; John, aged twenty-one; Jemima; Sarah; Mary and Marcy.
Park Benjamin, the journalist and author, was born Aug. 13, 1809, in Demerara, British Guiana, where his father was engaged in business. Park was liberally educated, became a distinguished man, and made his home in the city of New York, where he died Sept. 12, 1864.
MOSES B. HARVEY was born Feb. 8, 1806, in Stafford, Conn., and died Jan. 22, 1874. His youth was spent in Stafford, and there his business honors were won. Mr. Harvey enjoyed only such advantages as the common schools afforded, first in Stafford, later in Colchester. At the early age of fourteen he began an active life in the tannery owned by his father, learning the business of preparing the skins which later were converted into foot-wear in his fathers store.
This business, however, did not altogether please young Moses, and he later entered a machine shop situated in the same neighborhood, operated by Harvey Waters, and remained there until he had passed through the different grades and had become proficient. The mechanical knowledge thus acquired aided him greatly in the inventions which he subsequently worked out and patented, some of these being among the most useful of their kind ever applied in woolen mills.
Mr. Harvey with Elijah Fairman soon established a general machine shop for the manufacture of woolen machinery, in Stafford Hollow. Very early in the business of this firm a disastrous fire swept away the first venture, and might easily have discouraged a less determined man than Moses Harvey. However, he overcame this obstacle, and soon another shop was built on the same site in Stafford, and here for many years he was a successful builder of the peculiar machinery used in woolen mills.
Mr. Harvey was the inventor of the flock cutter, a most valuable machine, which he soon patented; he also made many improvements on old machinery, that in some cases almost revolutionized methods of manufacture. For a time Mr. Harvey conducted the business alone, but later took Charles Holt into
partnership; they gave employment to from eight to ten hands, and did a most satisfactory business. Finally he disposed of the business to Mr. Holt.
Mr. Harvey then began the business of manufacturing cotton warps in Stafford Hollow, in connection with his machine business, Mr. Harvey giving his particular attention to the manufacturing and Mr. Holt to the machinery. For many years he was the agent for the Valley Companys Warp mills at Stafford Hollow, which he had established. At the same time he controlled, with other partners, the Hop River Warp mills, of which he was general manager. These mills were located at Columbia, Conn., and Mr. Harveys partners were Joshua Lord, of Willimantic, and J.H. Bolton, of Stafford. Previous to the sale of his interests in the Valley Companys mills, Mr. Harvey built, in 1857, the present Glyn mills. Here with J.H. Bolton and Amos Harvey he continued the manufacture of cotton warps until his death, being the agent and general manager.
Mr. Harvey was identified with many business interests aside from those mentioned. For years, from January, 1870, until his death, he was president of the Stafford National Bank, of which he was one of the original incorporators, in 1854, and one of its first directors. He was also one of the original incorporators of the Stafford Springs Savings Bank, and the first vice-president of the institution, serving in that capacity and also as director for a long period, ending only with his demise.
A staunch advocate of Jacksonian Democracy, Mr. Harvey was not ambitious for office, although at various times he served as selectman of the town, and in other capacities. At one time he was a representative from Stafford to the Legislature, was judge of probate for several years, and was appointed by the governor Railroad Commissioner.
The marriage of Mr. Harvey took place Oct. 8, 1827, to Rachel Jennings. Miss Jennings was born Oct. 29, 1807, a daughter of William and Anna (Staunton) Jennings, the former of whom was a farmer of Willington, Conn. The death of Mrs. Harvey occurred Feb. 9, 1884. Moundridge Journal
William F. Helms, 67, died Friday at Mercy Hospital. He was a retired farmer and laborer and was a member of the United Methodist Church. Mr. Helms was born March 14, 1907 at Pauls Valley, Okla., and was married to Myrtle Ann Auernheimer on December 23, 1936 in Marion County.
Surviving are the widow; two sons, Dick D. of Inman and Billie D. of Moundridge; two daughters, Mrs. Darlene Powers of Halstead and Mrs. Betty Nichols of Clarksdale, Miss.; and 11 grandchildren.

Mr. John Stoner, an old resident of Gloversville, died on Saturday, August 5, 1887 of consumption. He was 58 years of aged. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon. Mrs. Stoner desires us to return her thanks to Canby Post, G. A. R. and all of their friends who kindly assisted her during her deepest affliction, the sickness and death of her husband.
John was born in Johnstown; he was the son of Jeremiah and Sarah Stoner. He married his wife,Catherine, around 1851. They had three children.
John was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted on Oct. 3, 1862 at Perth NY. He mustered in as a private of Co. A, 153rd NY Volunteers on Oct 17, 1862. He mustered out with his company on Oct 2, 1965 in Savannah, GA. One of his assignments was to drive the ambulance wagon.
John was survived by his wife Catherine, his two daughters Mrs. Eveline Fosmire and Mrs. Mattie Freeman and his son Jeremiah Stoner. Burial was in the family plot in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Mrs Humphrey's Funeral Is Set
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Milton Methodist Church for Mrs. Maudie J. Humphrey, 75, who died Monday at the Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Eis. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Cememtery in Milton. The body will be taken from the Wagler Fundral Home to the church at noon Thursday.
She was born in Davis County to Samuel and Sarah McGrew Wimp on Feb. 14 1890. She married Alva K. Humphrey in 1907. He preceded her in 1946.
Mrs. Humphrey was a member of the Stiles Methodist church and of the American Legion Auxiliary at Milton.
Survivors include one son, Lial of Milton;one brother, Ernest wimp of Bloomfield; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Patrick Hagan, aged 54, a life-long resident of Kingston, died at the family home, 373 Elm street, Kingston, this morning at 5:30 o'clock. Mrs. Hagan was the daughter of William and Katherine [death certificate has Ellen] Gannon Logue, who were pioneer settlers of the valley. My research had previously identified George W's spouse as (unknown) Hibbits. This was based on a 28 Dec 1918 Obituary in the Galena Daily Gazette which was found the Galena Library in April of 2000. However, this conclusion is in error.
The US Census for 1920, District 33 of Rice Twp., Jo Daviess Co., Il lists a George W. Green living with his brother-in-law Frank Hibbits. It also identifies this George W Green's birthplace as Missouri and his parents from England and Pennsylvania. This George W. who married a Miss Hibbits is clearly not the same George W. of this research.

Myron E. "Mike" Leslie Myron E. "Mike" Leslie of St. George Village, Roswell, GA, formerly of West Chester, PA, and Wayne, PA, died peacefully on May 19th, 2013. Survivors: He was the husband of Jeanne Farrington Leslie with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Robin Chalk of Alpharetta, GA, Susan Raebeck of Wainscott, NY, Laurie Finlayson of Renton, WA, and Elizabeth Kohl of Athol, ID, fifteen grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He attended Pomona College in California and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, in 1950. Mike served during the Korean War on board the anti-aircraft light cruiser Juneau (CLAA-119) known as the "Galloping Ghost of the Korean Coast." He later served on the destroyer Conway (DDE-509) on the East Coast. He also taught Rules of the Nautical Road and Emergency Ship Handling at the Fleet Training Center in Newport, RI. After his Naval service, he worked at the Heintz Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia, followed by Potts-Farrington Co., a steel service center, and Fanning Schuet Engineering Co. In 1967 he became the owner of Hussong-Walker-Davis Company, a textile-dyeing machinery company, which he introduced to the bulk materials handling field. Mike invented a skein-dyeing machine that resulted in dramatically decreasing the dyeing time required. These machines were used in the carpet and thread industries in this country and overseas. He was a former elder at Church of the Savior and at Living Oaks Community Church both of Wayne, PA, was a member of Proclamation Presbyterian Church of Bryn Mawr, PA, and was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Marietta, GA. Mike was a member of The U.S. Naval Institute, The Navy League, the Naval Academy Alumni and Athletic Association, a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and former member of the Union League of Philadelphia. Memorial Service: will be held on Saturday, June 1, 10:00AM, in the St. George Village auditorium (11350 Woodstock Road, Roswell, GA 30075). In lieu of flowers: Donations may be sent to Hope Presbyterian Church, 4101 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta, GA, 30066.

GALENA, Ill. - Myrtle B. Kness, 94, 215 Summit St., Galena, died Sunday, March 10, 1996, at the Galena-Stauss Nursing Home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. The Rev. Jim McCrea, of the First Presbyterian Church, Galena, will officiate. Burial will be in the Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Thursday at the chapel.
She was born on Oct. 27, 1901, in Galena, daughter of Harry and Mary (Thornton) Green. She married Floyd E. Kness on Sept. 3, 1925, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Galena; he died in June of 1980.
Surviving are a brother, Alfred (Gladys) Green, of Galena; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Albert and Clyde Green; and two sisters, Luella Green and Marie Coates.

Nancye Ruth Krebill, 85, of Keokuk, died at 7:27 a.m. Sunday, July 16, 2006, at River Hills Village in Keokuk.
Born July 7, 1921, in Waverly, Tenn., she was the daughter of Edward E. and Sabra Pace. On April 5, 1940, she married Roland F. Krebill in Bells, Tenn. He later died.
Mrs. Krebill worked part-time as a bookkeeper for her husband's firm, Krebill Engineering Co.
She loved serving in the Hospital Auxiliary, the YM-YWCA Board, the Keokuk Human Relations Council, the PTA, Scouts, American Heart Association, and many other groups. Her involvement in the philanthropic education organization and PEO spanned 50 years and included stints as president of local and state chapters and historian of the International PEO. In 1998 she was presented with The Spirit of Keokuk Award for her volunteerism and philanthropic work. She moved to Keokuk in 1950 and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. In 2003 she was designated a "saint" of the church. She began living in the skilled nursing unit of River Hills Village last October.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Edward Krebill of Keokuk and Dan Preston Krebill of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two daughters, Martha Lynn Pace of Black Mountain, N.C., and Elizabeth Jean Fox of Toledo, Ore.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, one brother and one son.
There will be no visitation.
The memorial service for Mrs. Krebill will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk, with the Rev. Bill Olmsted officiating.
DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established for the Iowa PEO Project Fund, Inc., and Trinity United Methodist Church.

Nancye "Ruth" Krebill, 85, of Keokuk died at 7:27 a.m. Sunday, July 16, 2006, in River Hills Village, Keokuk.
She was born on July 7, 1921, in Waverly, TN, the daughter of Edward E. and Saba Pace.

She was preceded in death by her parents, by two sisters, Martha Harmon and Evelyn Marsh, one brother, Edward E. Pace, Jr., and one son, John Robert Krebill.
Employed part-time as a bookkeeper for her husband’s firm, Krebill Engineering Company, and busy raising five children, Ruth still found time to devote to her community. She loved serving in the Hospital Auxilary, the YM-YWCA Board, the Keokuk Human Relations Council, the PTA, Scouts, American Heart Association, and many other benevolent groups. Her love of and involvement in the philanthropic education organization, PEO, spans 50 years, and includes stints as President of local and state chapters and Historian of the International PEO. Beginning in 1950, when Ruth and her family moved to Keokuk, she took the time to share her talents with Trinity United Methodist Church. In 2003, she was designated a “saint” of the church, in recognition of her decades of Christian service.
She began living in the skilled nursing unit of River Hills Village last October, after falling and breaking her elbow. She was fond of the professionals and the residents there, and made an impression on them as a “sweet lady.”
Memorial services were Friday, July 21, 2006, at Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by her good friend and former pastor Reverend Bill Olmsted and Dr. Emmanuel Dass. Arrangements are coordinated by DeJong’s Funeral Home.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Iowa PEO Project Fund, Inc., or to Trinity United Methodist Church.
