Fred Oldenburg: This gentleman may be classed among the most prosperous and prominent farmers and stock-raisers of Jo Daviess County. He has been a resident of Northern Illinois over 30 years, and first settled on land now occupied by the present site of Galena. Next he removed to another farm in the same township, and from there, in 1871, to the valuable homestead which he owns. This comprises 329 acres of land, located on section 1. It is nearly all in a productive condition, and stocked with excellent grades of cattle, horses, and swine. As a farmer, Mr. Oldenburg has been uniformly successful; while as a business man and a member of the community, his record does him great credit. He began life here very poor in purse; and, by the exercise of his native energy, has arisen to an enviable position, socially and financially.
The native place of our subject was on the other side of the Atlantic, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg, Germany, where his birth took place Nov. 27, 1831. His parents, Christian and Mary (Burns) Oldenburg, were natives of the same Province as their son, and there spent their entire lives; the mother dying at the age of sixty-four years, and the father when seventy-three. They were most worthy people, and members in good standing of the German Presbyterian Church. Their family consisted of four sons, namely: Christopher, who married a lady of his own country, and continues to reside there, engaged in farming; Fred, our subject; Christian, who came to America, married Miss Lena List, and, with his family, resides in West Galena Township; and John, a shoemaker by trade, pursuing his calling in Galena. Henry died in July, 1882, leaving a daughter, who lives in Galena.
Mr. Oldenburg, our subject, received a good education in the free schools of his native Province, and remained there until a young man twenty-three years old. Then, desirous of bettering his condition, he determined to cross the Atlantic, and embarked on the sailing-vessel “Humboldt,” at Hamburg, March 1, 1854. On the 22d of April following he landed in New York City, and made his way directly to this county. He was ready to accept whatever came to hand in the way of employment, and was soon engaged as a farm-laborer. With genuine German thrift and prudence, he soon began to save money; and thus obtained sufficient means to make his first purchase of land. In the meantime he was married in Galena, in November, 1865, to Miss Rosa McCarty. This lady was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, Feb. 29, 1833, and is of Irish ancestry. Her father, Patrick McCarty, was a farmer of modest means, and died in his native land, at the advanced age of eighty years. Later, his widow came to the United States, and died at her home, in Galena, in 1888. She was in her girlhood Sarah McCormick.
Mrs. Oldenburg was reared and educated in her native country, and, when reaching womanhood, came to America with other members of the family. Her first home in this county was Galena, where she lived until her marriage. She is now the mother of six children, namely: Henry, Sarah M., Rosanna C., John B., Fred D., and Nathan, Jr.; all of whom are at home with their parents. The latter are members in good standing of St. Michael’s Catholic Church at Galena. Mr. Oldenburg has always voted the Republican ticket, and has held the various township offices. He was largely instrumental in laying off Rawlins Township, believing that in many respects it would be of great advantage to the people.

Age 56 of Loomis, Louis Euer passed away Saturday, October 3, 2009 in his home.
Louis graduated from Casa Robles High School in 1972 and served for three years in the U.S. Army. Louis was an avid sportsman and loved the outdoors.
Louis was preceded in death by his father, Louis "Booie" Euer and his mother, Marjorie Gill Euer. Louis is survived by his wife, Jackie; his four children Ryan, Josh, Rachel and Louie; his sisters Renee and Rebecca; and his brother, Michael.
Services will be held at Reichert's Funeral Home in Citrus Heights on Monday, October 12, 2009 at 2 p.m.

PROMINENT FARMER OF DONNELLSON, IOWA CALLED AWAY IN DEATH.
Donnellson, Iowa. -- Funeral services for Otto C. Krebill, 72, prominent retired farmer here, were held March 7 at the Zion Mennonite Church. Rev. Harold Thiessen, the pastor, officiated.
A lifelong resident of this community, Mr. Krebill had served for many years on the Warren School board, was a charter member and past president of the Farm Bureau, and more recently was active in the Soil Conservation Service.
He was also active in the local church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and member of the church board.
Otto C. Krebill, 72, of Donnellson, Iowa died in Graham Hospital at Keokuk on March 5, 1958, after having been in failing health for a year and seriously ill for two weeks.
Born Nov. 16, 1885, north of Donnellson, he had spent his entire life in Lee county and was a retired farmer. On Feb. 11, 1914, he was married to Abbie Marie Schowalter at her home near Donnellson. She died Jan. 25, 1957. He was a member of Zion Mennonite Church, a teacher in its Sunday school for years, former chairman of the church board and past member of the Lee county fair board. He was also a charter member of the Farm Bureau and a past president, had served many years on the Warren school board and more recently on the Soil Conservation Service.
Surviving are three sons: Marvin of Grand Rapids, Mich., Homer and Dwight of Donnellson; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Helen) Hervey of Keosauqua; four brothers. Elmer of Billings, Mont., Wm. F. of Davenport, A. D. and E. J. both of Donnellson; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Neff of Oak Lawn, Ill., Mrs. A. B. Lowenberg and Emma Krebill of Donnellson; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. One sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in Millers' Home for Funerals at 1:30 and in the Mennonite church at 2:00 with Rev. Harold Thiessen officiating.
Mrs. James Slaughter and Mrs. Ernest Krehbiel sang, accompanied by Miss Iris Lowenberg. Interment was in the Mennonite cemetery.

Info from Roger Hervey: Abigail was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in her 50's and was in a wheel chair by age 54. Her husband, Otto, was her cargiver for the rest of her life. Her son, Dwight, and his wife Mildred moved into the family farm after they wer married in 1947. Otto and Abigail moved into Donnellson at that time. CMSgt. James A. Young died September 6, 2008, at Eielson AFB Alaska at the age of 51. Jim was born August 7, 1957 in Spencer, MA. He leaves his wife, Angela (Oldenburg) of Galena, Il; his sisters, Jeannine Bengtson of Spencer, Patricia Cloutier of Houston, TX, Charlotte Young of South Salem, NY, and Kathryn Payne of Worcester, MA. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Young and mother, Lorraine (Lacaire) Young of Spencer. He also leaves his step-mother, Marion Young and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of Jim's life and reception for friends and family will be held at the Spencer Country Inn on Friday, September 19 at 7:00 P.M. Light refreshments will be served. EIELSON AFB, Alaska -- Chief Master Sergeant James A. Young, 51, of Eielson Air Force Base, passed away on Sept. 6, 2008, at Basset Army Medical Center, Fairbanks, after a long and valiant battle with cancer
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Galena, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded at by the United States Air Force, Scott Air Force Base. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, is in charge of arrangements.
He was born on Aug. 9, 1957, in Spencer, Mass., son of Arthur E. and Lorraine B. (Lacaire) Young. He was a 1975 graduate of David Prouty High School, Spencer.
Jim enlisted in the USAF in Jan. 1981. He was a 27-year veteran who specialized in aircraft armament. He was a certified munitions loader on various Air Force fighter and bomber aircraft. He was deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of the first Gulf War and Operation Southern Watch. He was proud of his Air Force career.
Jim lived a life of service that set the example for others to follow. He retired as the 354th Fighter Wing, Wing Weapons Manager at Eielson AFB. The Air Force has lost a true chief, a great airman and a good friend. Jim was medically retired in December 2007.
He enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time in the outdoors with his wife, Angie, and two dogs, Petey and Jack.
Surviving are his wife of 18 years, Senior Master Sergeant Angela M. (Oldenburg) Young, USAF, formerly of Galena; four sisters, Jeannine A. Bengtson, of Spencer, Patricia M. Cloutier, of Houston, Charlotte M. Young, of South Salem, N.Y., and Kathryn Payne, of Worcester, Mass., his stepmother, Marion Young, of Spencer; his father-in-law, Bill (Karon) Oldenburg, of Galena; a sister in-law, Julie (Mike) Kapparos, of Galena; and several nieces, nephews and good friends, who will dearly miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

KREBILL-Marvin Krebill, aged 87 of Wyoming, died peacefully at home with his family present on Wednesday, January 26, 2011. Surviving him are his wife of 63 years, Helen (nee Wiemann); 10 children, Jim (Kathy), Theda (Joseph) Huyge, Raymond (Chris), John, Tom (Laurie), Karen (Brian) Williams, Paul (Linda), Ann (Dennis) Winn, Bob (Paulette), Mary (Brad) Campbell; 24 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, with one ‘on the way’; his brother, Dwight of Donnellson, Iowa; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Homer and sister, Helen Hervey of Iowa. Marvin was a longtime member of St. John Vianney Parish and the Knights of Columbus 4362. He was a proud WWII Army Infantry veteran and a member of the VFW. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with family at their cottage. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11am Monday at St. John Vianney Church, 4101 Clyde Park SW. Committal will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Marvin’s family will receive visitors Sunday 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming and Monday 10-11am at the church. A prayer vigil will be held Sunday at 7pm at the funeral home. A special thanks from the family to his Spectrum Health Hospice staff members. In lieu for flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to Spectrum Health Hospice or St. John Vianney Church. He is loved and will be missed.

Dorothy Rebecca Stuemky
NEWKIRK -- Dorothy Rebecca Stuemky, longtime Newkirk resident, died early Saturday morning, Sept. 18, 2004, at her home. She was 88.
The daughter of Howard Hubbard and Pearl Blanche McMahan Smith, she was born Feb. 23, 1916, in Apache. She grew up and received her early education at Apache and graduated from high school there. She then attended Cameron College in Lawton and then Weatherford College, receiving a two-year Oklahoma teaching certificate.
On April 2, 1938, she and John Robert Stuemky were married at Apache by his father, the Rev. William R. Stuemky. They established their first home in Apache, moving in July of that year to Newkirk. They opened the Otasco store and operated it for 41 years.
While her children were growing up, she was active in the PTA, Cub Scouts, Blue Birds and Camp Fire. Mr. Stuemky died Jan. 8, 1985.
Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She sang in the Chancel Choir for 61 years and had taught various Sunday school classes. An active member of the United Methodist Women, she served as president for two terms. She belonged to the Susannah and Naomi circles of the church. She was also a member of the Red Rose Garden Club and the Newkirk and Historical Society.
She loved her family, her church and her friends. She enjoyed Bible study groups in which she participated. A member of Friends of the Library, she was an avid reader and was once selected Library Person of the Year. Dorothy wrote many poems over the years. She enjoyed music and riding her bicycle. She also enjoyed traveling to many different countries, some of which were Canada, Mexico, Europe, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Russia and Israel. She was able to achieve her dream of seeing the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany, in 2000.
She is survived by three sons, Dr. John H. Stuemky of Oklahoma City, Robert S. and Myra Stuemky of Newkirk and James M. and Laura Stuemky of Del Norte, Colo.; one sister, Mary Jane Davis of Richardson, Texas; grandchildren, Stefani Stuemky of Norman, Cindy Koch and her husband Tim of Newkirk, Brian Stuemky of Moore, Thomas Stuemky and Alison Stuemky, both of Del Norte, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Dalton Koch of Newkirk. She is also survived by nephews, nieces and many lifelong friends.
Her teachings and wisdom will be missed by all.
In addition to her husband John, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Catherine Ann Stuemky; her parents; and two brothers, Jack Smith and Vernon Smith.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, in the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk with the Rev. James C. Hollifield officiating. Burial will follow in Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service.
The body will lie in state at the funeral home until 9 p.m. Thursday and until noon Friday. The casket will not be opened at the church.
Sons and grandsons serving as casket bearers will be John Stuemky, Robert Stuemky, James Stuemky, Brian Stuemky and Thomas Stuemky.
Memorial funds have been established with the Chancel Choir of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Contributions may be made in Mrs. Stuemky's memory through Eastman National Bank, P.O. Box 468, Newkirk 74647-0468.

Neil E. Carlson, 79, of Rock Falls, Ill., died May 18, 2007, in the Skilled Care Unit at Morrison Community Hospital.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Schilling, Sterling, Ill. Burial is in Coloma Township Cemetery, Rock Falls, at a later date. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Schilling.
He was born April 20, 1928.
He married Mary Thome-Pyse June 16, 1979.

RALPH R. WILEY
Ralph R. Wiley, son of Wesley and Julia Starr Wiley, was born March 21, 1911, near Keosauqua, and departed this life Friday, September 22, 1978, at his home in Cantril at the age of 67.
On February 20, 1933, he was married to Anna Pearl Grimes at Memphis, Missouri. They farmed in Van Buren County until retiring to Cantril in 1974.
Remaining to cherish his memory are his faithful wife, Anna; three daughters, Barbara Short and Helen Hamburg, both of Cantril and Sue Burchett of Milton; one son, Jim Wiley of Keosauqua; 15 grandchildren and a great granddaughter. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. May Matheson of Keosauqua, a brother, Stan of Cantril, other relatives and many friends.
Ralph will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, whose primary interests were his home and family.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 24, 1978 at 2 p.m. at the Cantril United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Edward Kail, pastor, and the Rev. Gerald Caughron officiating. Mrs. Merle McDonald was the organist. Honorary pallbearers were Lloyd Bennett, Fred Burkett, Craig Van Auken, Earl Keller, and Clyde Kerr. Rebecca Marie Gilpin, 56, of Dallas City, Ill., died at 8:45 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2006 at her home.
Born July 8, 1949, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Donald L. and Dorothy Heidbreder Ramsey. On March 25, 1983, she married Frederick L. Gilpin in Fort Madison.
She was raised in Fort Madison and graduated from Fort Madison High School. Before her marriage, she worked at Sheaffer Pen Co. in Fort Madison for 10 years. She and her husband lived near Nauvoo before moving to Dallas City a year and a half ago.
She enjoyed family outings, playing bingo, working on puzzles and watching hummingbirds. She collected cookbooks and cookie jars.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Donnie and Randall Gilpin, both of Dallas City; her mother, Dorothy Ramsey of Fort Madison; and two sisters, Lisa Ramsey of Fort Madison and Beverly Martin of Warrenton, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her father.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, with the Rev. Jim Luder officiating.

OTTUMWA – Mabel Eileen Coyne, 78, of Ottumwa, died November 6, 2021 at her home.
She was born March 24, 1943 in Ottumwa to Irvin and Allie Eakins Shepherd. She married Ronald Coyne April 17, 1965.
A 1961 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Eileen worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph Hospital, retiring in 1999. She was a member of Foursquare Evangelistic Church.
Surviving is her husband, Ron; their children, Tammy (Larry) Bergman of Booneville, MO, Angela (Amir) Rahimi of Centerville, Diana Six of Ottumwa, Ginger (Rob) Lobaugh of Ottumwa, Ronald Coyne of Ottumwa and Beth (Rob) Wiley of Keosauqua; fifteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and many others who knew her as "grandma”.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Harry Earl Shepherd, Ivan Laurice Shepherd, Carl Shepherd, Ralph Shepherd and Ron Shepherd; a sister, Icle Brisendine and an infant sister, Irene Shepherd.
Visitation will be open after 10 a.m. Thursday, November 11th at Reece Funeral Home with her family present to greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Reverend Johannes Theodorus Polhemius was born in 1598 in Boirkirchen, Switzerland (son of Johann Theodor Polhemius). He settled in the Palatine, Germany from1625-1628. He lived in Meppel, Overyssel, Netherlands from 1628-1630. He married at this time to an unknown first wife. He had a daughter baptized in 1629 inthe Netherlands. He returned to the Palatine, Germany and lived there from 1630-1635. He immigrated before October 1636, to Wholfstein, Rehnish, Bavaria. Hesailed on October 25, 1636 from Texel Harbor near Amsterdam, Holland and landedon Jan. 23, 1637 in Recif of Pernambuco, Brazil. He was in Olinda, Brazil from1635-1645. He married in 1643 on Isle Itmarca, Brazil to Catharina Van Werven.He was a minister in Itamacus, Brazil from 1645-1654. The Dutch in Brazil wereevacuated in 1654, when the country was surrendered to Portugal. In April 1654he sailed to the Netherlands, on a ship which was captured by a Spanish privateer (or French Man-of-War). In 1654 he landed in New Amsterdam, age about 56, settling in Flatlands, Long Island, New York. He was the first regularly stationed minister of the Dutch on Long Island. When he came here, his wife did not accompany him. She went to Holland to seek collection of the money owed him by the Dutch West India Company. He was the minister in the church in Flatbush from1654-1665. He was the Founding Father of the First Reformed Church of Brokelynand served there until his death. Rita Jo Hayes was born Dec. 14, 1960, at the Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua, Iowa, to Wayne "Sonny" Frank Hervey and Shirley Lou Weaver Hervey. Rita attended and graduated from Van Buren High School in 1979. She furthered her education at Indian Hills Community College, where she graduated with her associate of arts and sciences degree. She was united in marriage to Frank M. Hayes on April 25, 1987, at the Center Chapel Church in Keosauqua. Rita worked for 22 years at Center Village and then at the Bonaparte Inn for seven years. She belonged to the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Ladies Auxiliary and played on the women's pool league for many years. She lived her entire life in Van Buren County.
Rita is survived by a sister, Debbie (Dale) Dewitt; two brothers, Terry (Linda) Hervey and Ron Hervey; two aunts, Sherry Hall and Joyce Weaver; an uncle, Ben Gilbert; stepmother, Donna Hervey, stepchildren, as well as many extended family and friends.
Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Hayes; her parents; and paternal and maternal grandparents; as well as two aunts, three uncles, one brother-in-law, one sister-in-law and two nephews.

GALENA, Ill. - Robbie L. Bohnsack, 83, of Galena, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at the Elizabeth (Ill.) Nursing Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Furlong Funeral Chapel, 100 Carol-don Court, Galena, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena.
Mrs. Bohnsack was employed at the Galena Stauss Hospital for 26 years, retiring in 1988.
She was born on April 17, 1922, in Tullahoma, Tenn., daughter of Robert and Nell (Kendrick) Armstrong.
She married Norman Bohnsack on Aug. 19, 1943, in Rossville, Ga.; he preceded her in death on Jan. 25, 1988. Robbie and her husband moved to Galena in 1944.
She was a very active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, and did volunteer work for years with the food pantry and the share program.
Robbie loved her family, church and friends. Her hobbies were quilting and growing flowers. She enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren.
Surviving are a son, Norman (Breeze) Bohnsack, of Apple River; four grandchildren, Angela (Jim) Young, of Albuquerque, N.M., Julie (Mike) Kapparos, of Dubuque, Bryan (Jolene) Bohnsack, of Warren, and B'Ann (Dan) Dittmar, of Galena; and nine great-grandchildren.

Robert J Heidbreder Jr., 81, of Fort Madison, died at 10:20 am. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at West Point Care Center.
Born Jan. 14, 1923, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Robert J. Sr. and Georgia Hirstine Heidbreder. On Jan. 9, 1949, he married Hazel Imogene Murray in Kahoka, Mo.
Mr. Heidbreder worked for the railroad and was a farm hand. He then worked for Chevron Chemical Corp. for 17 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a World War II Army veteran and member of Donnellson American Legion. He loved to fish, garden and hunt for mushrooms.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ronald Heidbreder of Danville and Stanley Heidbreder of Donnellson; three daughters, Sheri Woolverton of Donnellson, Roberta Gonterman of Bonaparte and Brenda Featheringill of Fort Madison; 11 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Nellie Rudd, Dorothy Ramsey and Patty Marshall, all of Fort Madison, Hazel Bentram of Burlington, Esther Womack of Denmark, Donna Steeples of Arbela, Mo., and Sandy Howe of Ankeny; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at King-Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
The graveside service for Mr. Heidbreder will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Soldiers' Circle in Oakland Cemetery in Fort Madison, with Dan Dingus officiating.

Robert Montgomery was born about 1717, probably in Donegal, Ireland, and moved to America about 1733. About 1740, probably in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he married Mary White. In 1746 he moved to Catawba Creek in Augusta (now Botetourt) County, Virginia, where he lived on the 654 acre tract acquired by his father from Benjamin Borden in 1746 and sold to Robert in 1751. On July 11, 1761, he and Patrick Sharkey acquired the site of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church by patent. The land, two miles east of Fincastle, was surveyed at 138 acres. On may 13, 1796 his heirs were sued by the church for title to the land. (Lincoln County, Kentucky, Order Bk. 3, p. 307. Lancaster County Pennsylvania, Wills D1, 272. Botetourte County, Virginia Order Book 1793-97, entry for May 13, 1796, Stoner pp. 352, 359.) Montgomery moved to Reed Creek in Botetourt (now Wythe) County, Virginia, and on Sept 25, 1771, he acquired 500 acres on Reed Creek for 5 shillings from his cousin, John Calhoun of Long Cane settlement, Granville County, South Carolina. He sold the tract to his sons James and William Montgomery for 100 pounds on Dec 4, 1771 and the three families continued to live on the land. On May 2, 1781, he sold William Christian the 654 acres on Catawba Creek and in 1782, Robert, William, and James Montgomery gave John Montgomery and Walter Crockett power of attorney to sell the 500 acres on Reed Creek where they lived. On Feb 25, 1783 he entered a claim to 1,000 acres on Dix River in Lincoln County, and on March 13, 1788, he bought 200 acres on Jessamine Creek in Fayette County Kentucky from Jacob Myers for 40 pounds. He made his will on May 15, 1789, leaving his property to his wife Mary and to his children. The estate was probated on March 16, 1790. Farther west on the Cowpasture and Bullpasture were settlements well established in 1751 and 1752. In 1754 Robert Montgomery and Patrick Sharky entered a suitable tract of land on Sinking Spring Creek for the use of the Congregation, thus showing that the community was interested in its own form of worship and was willing to provide for its religious needs. This was the meeting place for the inhabitants of that whole region and the beginning of the flourishing Presbyterian congregation that succedded the Established Church at the County seat when the town of Fincastle was established. Robert Montgomery succeeded William Scott as Constable on Catawba. In 1756 he and Thomas McFarrin processioned the land in Capt. John McFarrin's Company on Catawba Creek. His father sent deponent's oldest brother, Robert, to Virginia to buy lands, and bought 654 acres on Catawba Creek, but one Clarke had bought part of the tract. Robert contracted as part payment to bring two uncommon large bells from Pennsylvania. Robert left his brother John on the land, returned to Pennsylvania, and then the father and family came. They accompanied Henry I when he interviewed Pope Calixtus at Gisors, Nov 1119 where they were famous for the extent of their learning. Both brothers were present at the deathbed of King Henry.
In the anarchy which followed King Stephen's accession, Robert engaged in private warfare with his hereditary enemy, Roger de Tosny [Toeni], whom he captured with Waleran's assistance. In 1137 the twins returned to England with King Stephen. Meanwhile, during Robert's absence in England, his possessions in Normandy were overrun until he came to terms with Roger de Tosny (Toeni). In 1139 the two brothers took a leading part in the seizing of the bishops of Salisbury and at Oxford. About this time King Stephen gave Robert the town and castle of Hereford along with other possessions. However, the Empress Maud, King Stephen's rival, had made Miles of Gloucester Earl of Hereford. After the defeat of King Stephen in 1141, Robert appears to have made a truce with the Angevin party in Normandy. In 1143 the future King Henry II, the son of The Empress Maud, restored Robert's lands to him and granted him the Stewardship of England and Normandy in order to secure Robert's (and Robert's son and heir) support for his claim to the crown. Robert was with King Henry II at the siege of Thorigny, Oct 1154, and later attended Henry's Coronation in Dec 1156. After Henry's accession, Robert continued to rise in royal favor and was made Justiciar in 1155. He acted in The King's absence from England from 1158 to 1164 as Viceroy. He was present at the Council of Clerendon, 13-28 Jan 1163/64, and was the first to attest to the "Constitutions" to which he secured the assent of Thomas a Becket. He worked to reconcile Henry II and the archbishop during their famous dispute. In 1165, Robert again acted a Viceroy when the King left England. In the spring of 1165, he went to Normandy with the King, but was back in England after Nov 1167 when he retained the Justiciarship until his death two years later. Robert married, sometime after Nov 1120, Amice, daughter of Ralph, Seigneur of Gael and Montfort in Brittany, who was the son of Ralph, Earl of Norfolk by Emma, daughter of William Fitz Osbern. With his marriage to Amice, he acquired a large part of the Fitz Osbern inheritance in Normandy and England. He died 5 Apr 1168, and was buried in Leicester Abbey. Amice survied him and is said to have entered a convent at Nuneaton. He was kinighted in 1122, and was Justiciar of England, 1155-1168. Besides their son Robert, Amice and Robert had three daughters, Isabel who married, first Simon de Liz II, Earl of Huntingdon, and second, Gervase Paynel; Hawise who married William, Earl of Gloucester; and Margaret who married Ralph de Tonsy (Toeni), sometime after 1155. Born March, 28, 1908, in Bellevue, Iowa, the daughter of George and Catherine Pogeman Schlecht. Married Albert Forsell on August 14, 1937, in Sabula, Iowa. He died Nov. 22, 1999, in Rockford. Rockford resident since 1934. She worked as an accounting teacher, starting in 1929 for Bayles Business College in Dubuque, Iowa and Brown's Business College in Rockford. She retired in 1968. Member of Oakvale Garden Club, Winnebago County Garden Club and River Bluff Auxiliary for 25 years. She enjoyed gardening, tutoring and volunteering for various organizations. Rose C. Oldenburg, 99 of Galena, IL passed away Monday, November 21, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, December 3, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena, where friends may call after 10:30 AM until the time of mass. Friends may call from 4 to 7 PM Friday, December 2, 2022, at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. A parish rosary will be recited at 3:30 PM, at the funeral home. The burial will be in the church cemetery. Military honors will be accorded graveside by Galena VFW Post #2665 and American Legion Post #193.
Rose was born on February 23, 1923, in Galena, the daughter of John and Ida (Marsden) Manz. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Galena High School in 1941. She married Leo Oldenburg on May 26, 1948, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Galena and he preceded her in death on December 27, 2010. Rose was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church all her life. After high school, Rose moved to Chicago, Il where she worked and lived with her sister. She felt called to serve her country in support of the WWII effort by joining the U.S. Navy Waves in August 1944. She was assigned duty in Washington, DC, and later transferred to Honolulu, HI where she joined America in celebrating VJ Day on August 15, 1945. Rose returned to Galena after the war and worked as a dental assistant until she joined her fiancé, Leo Oldenburg, in running the East Side Grocery. Together they grew that business and opened Leo’s Super Valu supermarket in 1959. Rose was a wonderful wife and mother as well as a tireless volunteer in parish and community activities. She was a member of St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society, Catholic Daughter of America, Galena Hospital Auxiliary, and Meals on Wheels. She also continued helping in the grocery store and was a lifelong volunteer in being a Sacristan at St. Mary’s Church. Her hobbies included antiquing and traveling. She and Leo made many trips throughout the US and abroad. Rose was a very faith-filled person. She had great inner strength and indomitable spirit. All her children and grandchildren were inspired by her and learned from her how to live a life rich in faith, truth, gratitude, and energy.
She is survived by her three children, David (Margaret Piquett) Oldenburg and Mary (Gary) Jobgen of Galena, and Mark (Ann Feeley) Oldenburg of Rochester, MN, nine grandchildren, Matthew Oldenburg, Jennifer (Oldenburg) Anderson, Paul Oldenburg, Eric Oldenburg, Angela (Oldenburg) Kueny, Joseph Oldenburg, Martha Oldenburg, Emily (Jobgen) Bloedel, and Christina (Jobgen) Frank, two step-grandchildren, Shelly and Michael Jobgen, and twelve great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Dorie Virtue of Galena.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Charles, and Joseph Manz, and three sisters, Edith Shuey, Mary Dhont, and Lorraine Foecking.

KEOSAUQUA - Florencie May (Ewing) Hervey, 82, formerly of Keosauqua, died at 7:37 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at Sunnybrook Living Care Center in Fairfield.
She was born March 11, 1928, in Kilbourne, the eldest daughter of Martin F. and Florence Grade Ewing. Florencie attended rural country schools and graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1945. She married Byron W. Hervey on March 30, 1948, in Fairfield. They were divorced in 1993. She worked at the Sugar Bowl, Downard’s Cafe, as a nurse’s aide at the Good Samaritan Home and retired in 1993 after 30 years as the bookkeeper for Hervey Implement Company, all in Keosauqua.
Florencie is survived by two daughters, Marshia Mosena (Bruce) of Bella Vista, Ark., and Kathy Horn (Francis) of Fairfield; and three sons, Steve Hervey (Carol) of Birmingham, Randy Hervey and Kevin Hervey (Gayle) of Keosauqua; two sisters, Ruth Clark (Ernie) of Keosauqua and Reva McRoy (Bill) of Bloomfield; and one brother, Lee Ewing (Becky) of Stockport; nieces, nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one half brother, Wayne Grade; and one brother, William Ewing; one sister in infancy; and her sister-in-law, Valeria Ferris.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday Oct. 1, 2010, at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua with Rev. ellis andrews officiating. She will be cremated following services. A private committal service at Forbes Cemetery with the family will be held at a later date.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon immediately preceding the funeral service.
Memorials for Forbes Cemetery may be left at the funeral home or mailed to Kathy Horn, 504 E. Washington Ave., Fairfield, Iowa 52556.

Cautionary Note:
Some researchers show Seth Lucas Summers as the daughter of Capt. Thomas Harrison and Seth Elizabeth Short; granddaughter of Col. Burr Harrison, the Indian translator, member of the Virginia House of Burgesses (1679) and Ambassador to the Piscataway Indians (1699), and his wife Sarah Frances Burdette. Capt. Thomas Harrison and Seth "Short" did have a daughter Seth Harrison but she married John McMillion and was a second cousin of Seth Blake Lucas Summers, both their great-grandparents being Cuthbert Harrison and Susannah Burr Harrison. They were also probably cousins through Cockacoeske and Seth Short.

1716: Maj. John West's will in Stafford County, VA. gave to Seth Lucas "1000 lbs. tob'o" and also deeded land to brothers John and Benjamin Blake as well as a suit of cloths to their father Robert Blake.
1717: In a sworn deposition John Summers states that he married the widow Lucas in the Winter of 1717.
1723: Thomas Harrison gave "Seith Lucas and her second husband John Summers and their son John" a lease of land for life."In 1723 Thomas Harrison, denoted as of the "Retirement," leased one hundred acres, part of the West-Pearson-Harrison-Harrison patent, to Seth's second husband, John Summers, for the "natural lives" of himself, herself, and their son John. Such a "lease-for-lives" was a common form of long-term lease throughout the eighteenth century.

Davis, Sharon Eileen, 62, of Wilton Manors passed away at home after a courageous battle with cancer on December 25, 2008. She was born in Connecticut and moved to Wilton Manors when she was in 3rd grade. Sharon was a loving wife to her husband of over forty years, Richard "Slugger" Davis. Sharon was employed in the insurance industry for most of her adult life and held numerous certifications. Those certifications allowed her to teach others to get their insurance licenses. Sharon loved to go line dancing and dining with her best friend of over 50 years, Carroll Jacques of Wilton Manors. Sharon was also known for her quick wit and sense of humor that is going to be truly missed by all. Traveling was another of Sharon's passions, but her number one priority in life was her daughter, Kimberly and granddaughter, Brooke. There was not a month that went by that the three of them were not planning a trip somewhere. Sharon's love for them can never be measured. Sharon is survived by her husband, Richard; daughter, Kimberly (John) Leonard, Coconut Creek, FL; granddaughter, Brooke Kneer, Coconut Creek, FL; stepgranddaughters, Taylor & Katie Leonard, Tennessee; mother, Shirley Botsford, Sebring, FL; brother, Norman Botsford, Gainesville, FL; sister, Susan McIntyre, Sebring, FL; and numerous family and friends. BRATTLEBORO -- Carrie E. Tracy, 85, of Oak Grove Ave. in Brattleboro, died unexpectedly, Thursday, March 17, 2005 at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Brattleboro.
She was born in Woodford on Jan. 26, 1920, the daughter of Frank Edwin and Florence Ellen (Cosgrove) Harvey and attended local schools. She was employed at Mt. Snow in West Dover for many years but enjoyed taking care of her home.
She enjoyed taking long rides, working outside with her flowers and working on crossword puzzles. She always had a smile for everyone she met and cherished spending time with her family.
She married Victor D. Tracy Sr. on Feb. 26, 1936. Mr. Tracy died Oct. 12, 1986. She was born on Nov. 17, 1947, in Galena, daughter of Norman and Robbie (Armstrong) Bohnsack. She married William "Bill" Oldenburg on Aug. 21, 1965, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Galena.
She was a graduate of Galena High School. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and its altar and rosary society and the National Organization of the Late Great Chevy Association. Sherry was a loving mother and dearly loved her flowers, fishing and riding horses with her family in the country side.

Born Sept. 16, 1937, in Fairfield, she was the daughter of Harold "Bill" and Beulah Calkins Weaver. She married Wayne F. Hervey. They later divorced.
Mrs. Hervey worked at Universal Producing Co. in Fairfield and Fairfield Glove Co. She also worked at Center Village Care Center in Keosauqua as a cook, medicine aide and nurse's aide.
She grew up in Birmingham. She was baptized into the Christian faith on June 1, 2005. She was a 16-year member of Van Buren Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Keosauqua, where she served as a guard and trustee.
Survivors include two daughters, Deborah DeWitt of Bonaparte and Rita Jo Hayes of Keosauqua; two sons, Terry Hervey of Birmingham and Ronald Hervey of Pulaski; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Sherry Hall of Birmingham; one brother, Paul Jack Weaver of Mount Pleasant; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mrs. Hervey will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pedrick Funeral Home, with the Rev. Justin DeVries officiating. Burial will be in Center Chapel Cemetery southeast of Keosauqua.

The index material comes from three different sources:
1. Sioux County Headstones Indexes done in 1979 -1981 by the NW Iowa Genealogical Society of LeMars IA. It was done by members walking each cemetery, filling out cards on each stone and then indexin g by cemetery. It has burials that have headstones and comprises most of the entries. Many burials were made where there was no marker put on or left over time. Unless otherwise listed the entries wil l have come from this index. Thanks to the NW Iowa Genealogical Society for permission to use these indexes to assemble this large index which is in alphabetical order by whole county.
2. The WPA (Work Progress Administration Project) made an index of Sioux County graves 1938-1941.(the letter 'O' is missing from this index. When a record from this index is not included in the inde x done in (1979-1981) as listed above, then an entry was made and noted with (WPA So.Co.Index).
3. Obituary Files 1980-1994 The Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society has been clipping obituaries from the local newspaper since 1979 to continue the indexing process beyond the index in Item 1 . above. The deaths from the GSCGS Obituary file of Sioux County burials (1980- 1994) were also added and noted with a (GSCGS Obit. file) after the entry. The actual card files contain many more are a obituaries from local outlying county areas.

This cemetery is located in the northeast quarter of Section 30 to the side and behind the Catholic Church. It is the only one that still exists in Menominee Township, the other known cemetery locate d in Section 32 is totally destroyed. The following inscriptions were read in 1978.
